Irene, South Africa

Irene is a small town south of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. It was named after Irene Nelmapius, the daughter of a well know pre-Boer War financier. The British built a concentration camp here during the Boer War to house Boer women and children.

The ashes of General Jan Christiaan Smuts are scattered on Smuts Koppie near Doornkloof farm which was Smut's family home.
