Huntersville is a town located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 24,960.
Geography
Huntersville is located at 35°24'34" North, 80°51'49" West (35.409544, -80.863622).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 80.7 km² (31.2 mi²). 80.7 km² (31.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,960 people, 9,171 households, and 6,859 families residing in the town. The population density is 309.4/km² (801.4/mi²). There are 9,859 housing units at an average density of 122.2/km² (316.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 88.42% White, 7.47% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 3.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,171 households out of which 41.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 19.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 40.7% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $71,932, and the median income for a family is $80,821. Males have a median income of $53,553 versus $33,877 for females. The per capita income for the town is $30,256. 3.1% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line.
Life in Huntersville, NC
Huntersville is one of three towns located north of Charlotte, NC, but within the same county. These three towns make up the area known as "Northmeck" and primarily consist of suburban, golf-course style communities. The area is served by express bus transportation to the downtown business areas of Charlotte, and as such is primarily a bedroom community for the city.
The town also is known recreationally as a lake community because of its proximity to Lake Norman, a large man-made lake created by Duke Power to serve the region's electrical requirements. The lake attracts boaters and water skiers from several surrounding states. Huntersville is also home to several private golf courses including NorthStone and Birkdale.
