Henry E. Brown, Jr.

Henry Edward Brown, Jr. (b. December 20, 1935) is a politician from the state of South Carolina, currently representing the state's 1st Congressional district (map) in the U.S. House.

Brown was born in Bishopville, South Carolina. Brown worked for the Piggly Wiggly grocery store, becoming the vice president of the stores. Brown was elected to the Hanahan, South Carolina city council in 1981 and he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1984 as a Republican. Brown chaired the Ways and Means committee and he claimed credit for the largest tax cut in state history. Congressman Mark Sanford pledged to run for a fourth term in the House of Representatives in 2000. Brown ran for the seat, passing out "Oh Henry" candy bars during the primary election as a way to increase his name recognition. Brown won the runoff and then he easily won the general election. Brown didn't have any opposition from the Democratic Party in 2002 and that has remained the same for the 2004 election.
