The socio-economic composition of the Hamilton Mountain is diverse, having low-income public housing residents as well as million dollar estates, highly paid unionized workers and minimum-wage unskilled workers, and well established historic white families and recent non-white immigrants.

This diversity makes Hamilton Mountain a swing riding. Although the long tenure of the incumbent representatives tends to mask this fact, many elections are virtually two- or three-way ties. For instance, in 1988 less than a hundred votes separated the first and second place finishers and in 2004 election only three thousand votes separated the first and third place finishers.

Federal riding

The federal riding was created in 1966 from parts of the Hamilton South and Wentworth ridings. It has elected the following MPs:

• 1968-1972: Gordon Sullivan (Liberal)
• 1972-1974: Duncan Beattie (Progressive Conserative)
• 1974-1979: Gus MacFarlane (Liberal)
• 1979-1980: Duncan Beattie (Progressive Conserative)
• 1980-1986: Ian Deans (New Democratic)
• 1986-1988: Marion Dewar (New Democratic)
• 1988-Present: Beth Phinney (Liberal)

Provincial riding

Provincially, this riding is a tossup with every major Ontario party having at least held this seat at one time, Bountrogianni won in 1999 in one of the closest races.

• 1995-1999: Trevor Pettit (Progressive Conservative)
• 1999-Present: Marie Bountrogianni (Liberal)
