Group (air force unit)

For some other uses of the word "group" please see Group

Group is a term used by different air forces for a unit of command. The size of this unit varies considerably between services. This term is cognate with groupe, its equivalent in the French Air Force.

In the Royal Air Force and other British-derived air forces a group is made up of several wings or stations, and itself forms part of a major command. Originally the rank of Group Captain was specified to command such a unit, though it has more recently been commanded by an air vice-marshal.

In the United States Air Force a group is made up of several squadrons, and itself forms part of a wing. The unit is smaller than the RAF group.
