Green Party in Northern Ireland

The Green Party in Northern Ireland is a minor political party operating in Northern Ireland. They are a distinct party with respect to both the Irish Green Party and the other UK Green Parties but maintain close ties with all these parties.

The party's origins lie in the UK Green Party which dissolved in the early 1990s when they decided to reform themselves as three distinct parties: the Green Party of England and Wales, the Scottish Green Party and the Green Party of Northern Ireland. This was not an acrimonious split and was in line with the Green commitment to decentralisation.

They have met with limited electoral success, especially compared to the progress of the other Green parties in Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. They have won no parliamentary or assembly seats in their history, and polled only 0.9% of first preference votes in Northern Ireland at the European election in 2004, coming bottom of the poll.
