Great Falls, Virginia

Great Falls is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Fairfax County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 8,549.

It is a very wealthy suburb of Washington, DC located along the Potomac River at the fall line. Many important and influential people live there.

Geography

Great Falls is located at 39°0'6" North, 77°16'60" West (39.001609, -77.283249).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 46.4 km² (17.9 mi²). 46.3 km² (17.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,549 people, 2,785 households, and 2,464 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 184.7/km² (478.5/mi²). There are 2,852 housing units at an average density of 61.6/km² (159.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 88.83% White, 1.20% African American, 0.14% Native American, 7.40% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. 2.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,785 households out of which 44.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 82.4% are married couples living together, 4.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 11.5% are non-families. 8.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.07 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 35.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $159,695, and the median income for a family is $170,618. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $62,206 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $78,149. 1.8% of the population and 0.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.5% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
