Marszalek

Marszałek was one of the highest officials in the royal court since the 13th century in Poland.

In the 14th century called "Marszałek Królestwa Polskiego" (Marshal of the Kingdom of Poland).

From the 15th until 18th century he served as the "prime minister" of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, since then called "Marszałek wielki koronny" (Great Marshal of the Crown). His diuties were: obey the Court Etiquette, leading the Senate sessions, leading the judiciary where the King was present and fulfil the police power.

His subtitute was the "Marszałek nadworny koronny" (Court Marshal of the Crown, also minister) who supervise the royal court.

In the Grand Duchy of Lithuania existed the offices of "Marszałek wielki litewski" (Great Marshal of Lithuania) and "Marszałek nadworny litewski" (Court Marszal of Lithuania) but also the office of "Marszałek ziemski" (District Marshal).

Since the 17th century the King nominated the "Marszałek dworski" (Marshal of the Court), who was the private "manager" of the royal court.

After the partitions of Poland - in the Russian occupied part of Poland - existed the "Marszałek szlachty" (Marshal of the szlachta). He was chairman of the Szlachta Council, choosen by sejmik and later - since 1863 - nominated.

In the Polish Kingdom in 1849-1861 the "Marszałek szlachty" was chairman of szlachta deputies in a governorship.
