The Gowanus Expressway is an expressway in the Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York. A part of Interstate 278, it connects the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, with junctions along the way with the Shore Parkway (part of the Belt Parkway) and the Prospect Expressway . The portion north/east of its junction with the Belt Parkway is a reconstruction of the former Gowanus Parkway, a cars-only highway, considered part of the Belt Parkway. Part of the Gowanus Parkway was built on the structure of the BMT Third Avenue Line , a closed elevated railway.
Recently, the New York State Department of Transportation has considered putting part or all of the elevated road underground.
