Gilgandra, a town and Local Government Area (Shire of Gilgandra) in central west New South Wales, Australia, has a few thousand inhabitants and was established some time between 1800 and 1900. It is located on the junction of theNewell Highway, Oxley Highway and Castlereagh Highway and can be reached in about six hours by car from Sydney. It lies on the Castlereagh River. Like Coonabarabran, Gilgandra also claims to be a gateway to the Warrumbungles National Park.
During the World War I, a recruitment march to Sydney began in Gilgandra. The march was known as the Cooee March, after the distinct call of "cooee" they shouted to attract recruits.
