Gianluca Pagliuca

Gianluca Pagliuca (born December 18, 1966 in Bologna) is an Italian football goalkeeper, who currently plays for Bologna in Serie A.

In his club career, Pagliuca has played for Sampdoria (1987-94), Inter (1994-99), and Bologna (1999-). He won the Cup Winners' Cup and one scudetto with Sampdoria and the UEFA Cup with Inter. Pagliuca was the starting goalkeeper for Italy at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

His international career has seen him getting dismissed from the pitch at the 1994 against Norway after deliberately handling the ball outside of the penalty area which meant a certain red card. Nevertheless, he featured for the remaining fixtures of the World Cup until the final where his team lost to Brazil in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Pagliuca's international career appeared to have been halted with the influence of fellow Italy goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi who has built his name at SS Lazio, however, during the World Cup 1998, Peruzzi's injury in the buildup to the tournament in France meant that Pagliuca would be given another chance to enter the fray. His team played some of the most dour football in that World Cup and set up a quarter-final encounter with France where another penalty shoot-out saw Italy trooped out as losers when midfielder Luigi di Biagio kicked his final attempt against the cross-bar.

At Inter, he soon found himself down the pecking order not long after the World Cup 1998 more so after Italy goalkeeper Francesco Toldo joined Inter from Fiorentina has limited his chances for a first team place, and signed on for Bologna in 1999 and has since been featuring regularly in the team.
