Georgie Fame

Georgie Fame is a British R&B singer whose real name is Clive Powell. He was born on June 26, 1943 at Leigh in Lancashire, England.

Brief biography

At 16 years of age Clive Powell (Georgie Fame) entered into a management agreement with Larry Parnes who gave artists new names such as Marty Wilde and Billy Fury. Georgie Fame was already playing piano for Billy Fury in a backing band called the Blue Flames which later became billed as Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames. The band had some success with its R&B but they became also became known in the USA when their single recording of the Ballad of Bonnie & Clyde was released.

Georgie Fame has also toured as one of the Rhythm Kings with his friend Bill Wyman playing bass.

Radio Caroline

He also attained a place in broadcasting history when Ronan O'Rahilly began to relate various stories of how he had managed Georgie Fame and ended up with his first record that he could not get played by the BBC. As the fable goes, O'Rahilly then took the Georgie Fame record to Radio Luxembourg who also turned him down to which O'Rahilly claims that he reacted by stating he would start his own radio station in order to promote the record. As the myth goes, that is how the offshore pirate radio station Radio Caroline was originally conceived as a broadcasting venture.
