Funningur is located on the north-west coast of Eysturoy. Behind the village rises the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands: Slættaratindur (882m).

Tradidion says that the first viking who settled on the Faroe Islands settled in Funningur. This was Grimur Kamban . He came from the British Islets and settled here in the year 800.

The church in Funningur is from 1847.
