Fred J. Mifflin

(Redirected from Fred Mifflin)

Fred J. Mifflin (born February 6 1938) is a retired Rear Admiral in the Canadian Forces and a former politician.

After retiring from naval service, Mifflin entered politics and was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1988 Canadian election as the Liberal MP for the Newfoundland and Labrador riding of Bonavista-Trinity-Conception . After the Liberals came to power under Jean Chrétien in the 1993 Canadian election, Mifflin was appointed parliamentary secretary to the ministers of national defence and veterans affairs. In 1996 he was elevated to the Canadian Cabinet as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, In 1997 a cabinet shuffle made him Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency in 1997. Mifflin was an ally of fellow Newfoundlander Brian Tobin who encouraged Chrétien to appoint Mifflin to Cabinet rather than George Baker. However, Mifflin was considered a disappointment as minister and was dropped from Cabinet in August 1999. He did not run in the 2000 Canadian election.
