Francis Leopold McClintock

Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907) was a British explorer known for his discoveries in the Canadian arctic islands. In 1848 he became a member of the Royal Navy, joining a series of searches for the arctic John Franklin expeditions between 1848 and 1854. Working with Inuits he mastered travel by sled, and used it to map Melville Island and discover Prince of Wales Island and Prince Patrick Island. In 1857 he was given command of the Fox, returning to the arctic and discovering records of the Franklin party's movements. This tale was published in The Voyage of the Fox in 1859. McClintock left the Royal Navy in 1884 as an admiral.
