Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Aiport is an airport located in Dania Beach, Florida between the cities of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood , in Broward County, Florida , 27 miles north of Miami . It was opened May 1 , 1929 , on an abandoned golf course . It has the IATA Airport Code FLL , and ICAO Airport Code KFLL . In 2004 , the Fort Lauderdale airport processed 20.81 million passengers and is currently the fastest growing airport in the USA. It is considered to be the main domestic airport in South Florida, supplementing Miami International Airport 's role as the main international airport.
FLL is South Florida 's main airport for low-fare airlines such as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue . In the late 1990s, it also began supplementing Miami International Airport 's role as an intercontinental gateway, especially for charter carriers. It is also the main hub of operations for Spirit Airlines , based in nearby Miramar, Florida . In 2005, US Airways opened its new Latin American/Carribean gateway at FLL.
The airport has been used by filmakers as a location shot numerous times, the most famous of these being scenes from Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise .
On the morning of August 2 , 1985 , Delta Air Lines Flight 191 , on a Fort Lauderdale -Dallas -Los Angeles route, crashed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport , killing 136 of the 167 passengers on board.
