Falkenberg Municipality

Falkenberg is a Municipality in Halland County, in southwest Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 1115.3 km². Of the total population of 38817, 19329 are male, and 19488 are female. The population density of the community is 35 inhabitants per km², with a majority of the citizens living in the western part of the municipality. Highway E6/E20 passes through the city as well as the West Coast Railline (Västkustbanan) between Gothenburg and Malmö.

Today, Falkenberg holds a strong position in the food and beverage industry with companies such as Arla Foods, Carlsberg and SIA Glass having plants in the city. In the inland Gekås, a major department store draws visitors from all the country. Falkenberg is also a tourist city, mainly for its many beaches.

History

The vicinity of Falkenberg has been inhabited for some time, and has been recognized as a city since around 1432. During the 15th century two cities bearing the name existed, Old Falkenberg and New Falkenberg. New Falkenberg has existed since at least 1474, but possibly since a few years earlier.
