Ernle Chatfield, 1st Baron Chatfield

Alfred Ernle Monttacute Chatfield, 1st Baron Chatfield, PC (1873-1967) was a British naval officer who served as First Sea Lord from 1933 until 1938. In 1939 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Chatfield and he was subsequently appointed as Minister for Coordination of Defence in the government of Neville Chamberlain, despite having a non-political background. He served in this position through the outbreak of the Second World War, but found the post increasingly obsolete in the structure of Chamberlain's government and stood down in April 1940.
