Egham

Egham is a small town in Surrey in south east England, situated south west of London and close to the M25 London orbital motorway. It is part of the London commuter belt. Egham's neighbouring towns are Staines, Englefield Green and Virgina Water . Windsor Great Park and the towns of Old Windsor and Windsor are a few kilometres to the north west.

Royal Holloway, University of London is situated on Egham Hill, about one kilometer from the town.

Administratively it is in the Borough of Runnymede.

Transport

It is situated on the London Waterloo to Reading and Waterloo to Weybridge railway lines, both operated by South West Trains. Several bus routes connect the town and Royal Holloway to Staines and nearby Heathrow Airport.

History

In 1086, the Domesday Book recorded that Egham consisted of 15 hides of land and was worth £30 10s 0d.

The Magna Carta was signed at nearby Runnymede in 1215, and is commemorated by a memorial in Egham's high street.
