The Eastern Maine Railway (EMR) is a 105 mile railway operating in New Brunswick and Maine between McAdam, New Brunswick and Brownville Junction, Maine .
EMR is a subsidiary of New Brunswick Southern Railway (NBSR) which operates between Saint John, New Brunswick and McAdam. NBSR and EMR are subsidiaries of industrial conglomerate J.D. Irving Limited of Saint John. The companies were established in 1994 and began operations between Saint John and Brownville Junction on January 1, 1995 from Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR).
EMR provides connections at Mattawamkeag, Maine to the former Maine Central Railroad (MEC), now operated by Guilford Transportation Industries (GTI), and at Brownville Junction to the former Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and Canadian American Railroad , both now operated by the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway. NBSR connects with an isolated section of MEC trackage (operated by GTI) at Calais, Maine using a branch running from McAdam to St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and with Canadian National Railway at Saint John.
The EMR trackage between the International Boundary at Vanceboro, Maine to Mattawamkeag was built as the European and North American Railway of Maine and later operated by MEC until being sold to CPR in 1974. EMR's trackage west of Mattawamkeag to Brownville Junction was built as part of the International Railway of Maine, opening in 1889. CPR had been given operating rights by MEC over the Mattawamkeag-Vanceboro section from 1889-1974 when ownership was transferred to the former.
