Eastchester is a town located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 31,318. The town includes the villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe.

The Town of Eastchester is in the south part of the county.

History

Richard Sacchi

On March 21, 1996, tragedy struck the small town of Eastchester when a resident named Richard Sacci shot his entire family, including his grandmother, with a submachinegun . When the police camped outside his home in Southern Eastchester, a 12-hour stand-off resulted in the death of Officer Michael Frey . The street parallel to the Eastchester Police Station was renamed Michael Frey Drive in his memory. A Westchester County ad campaign for civil responsibility still uses the phrase: "Thank a police officer in honor of Michael Frey."


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²). 12.7 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,318 people, 12,626 households, and 8,408 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,462.7/km² (6,376.3/mi²). There are 13,035 housing units at an average density of 1,025.0/km² (2,653.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.35% White, 2.80% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 6.85% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 4.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,626 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $78,224, and the median income for a family is $103,369. Males have a median income of $71,420 versus $47,725 for females. The per capita income for the town is $49,941. 4.2% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
