Division of Higgins

The Division of Higgins is an Australian federal electoral division in Melbourne, Australia's inner eastern suburbs. Created in 1948, Higgins was named in honour of Henry Higgins, a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1901 to 1906 and later a Justice of the High Court of Australia.

The electorate includes the affluent suburbs of Armadale, Malvern, South Yarra and Toorak, as well as parts of Burwood, Camberwell, and Oakleigh. These suburbs lie primarily in the local government area of Stonnington.

Higgins has been held by the conservative Liberal Party since its creation. Previous notable incumbents include former Prime Ministers Harold Holt and John Gorton, while the current member is federal treasurer Peter Costello.

The best result by a minor party in Higgins was 15.8% by the Australian Democrats in 1990 while the 1998 election saw ten candidates nominate for the seat.
