Discovery Zone (or "DZ" for short) was a chain of entertainment facilities featuring elaborate indoor mazes designed for young kids, including slides, climbing structures and pits full of plastic balls. The chain was founded by Ronald Matsch in 1989.
Children 6-10 years old were encouraged to have birthday parties there. The Discovery Zone existed from 1989 to 1999. On March 25-26, 1996, in Wilmington, Delaware, Discovery Zone filed for bankruptcy with debts of up to $366.2 million. Chuck E. Cheese's parent company bought Discovery Zone in 1999, and the chain no longer exists.
