Dirk Maggs

Dirk Maggs is a radio director who works for BBC Radio 4.

As of 2005, Maggs is working on new episodes of Douglas Adams' science fiction comedy series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, adapted from the novels based on the series that Adams wrote after it ended its original run.

Biography

Dirk Maggs mis-spent periods of his professional youth crewing on feature films and making promotions for BBC television. However he originally trained as a BBC Radio Studio Manager and has subsequently won awards by evolving Radio Drama and Audio Theatre into the "Audio Movie" - fully cast atmospheric drama productions with layers of cinematic effects and music, mixed into Dolby Surround (which he pioneered at the Beeb). As a result the US Museum of Television & Radio in New York have acquired several of Dirk's productions for their collection, and the Directors Guild of Great Britain asked him to give a seminar on his work at the Actors Centre in London.

His work has included various adaptations of work by Agatha Christie, Jasper Carrott, Russ Abbot and Douglas Adams. He also adapted and/or produced radio versions of Batman, Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel , It's Been A Bad Week , Peter Pan, Superman, The News Huddlines , and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

His current project is directing, adapting and co-producing two brand new series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, who originally chose Maggs for the job in 1993. The programmes (via Above the Title productions) feature the original cast from the first two radio series, including Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern, Mark Wing-Davey, Susan Sheridan and Stephen Moore. The first of these new series, adapted from the novel Life, the Universe and Everything, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2004, and the latter will be a double series adaptation of the final two novels, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish and Mostly Harmless, broadcast in 2005.
