The MIDI standard was first proposed by Dave Smith in 1981 in a paper to the Audio Engineering Society. The MIDI Specification 1.0 was published in August 1983.

Smith's company Sequential Circuits was started in 1974. In 1978, Sequential built the first synthesiser, the Prophet 5 , to incorporate a microprocessor.
