Cynic (band)

Cynic is a band that was formed in Florida, America, in 1987 by vocalist/guitarist Paul Masvidal , guitarist Jason Gobel , bassist Mark Van Erp , and drummer Sean Reinert.

Mark van Erp was replaced by Tony Choy and the band recorded various demos. The first have a traditional death metal sound, but the in the later ones things changed toward a highly complex, experimental and extremely technical form of metal. Many influences from jazz and fusion can be heard in their first, and only, album: Focus (which was recorded in 1993 with new bass player Sean Malone.)

Cynic disbanded during the fall of 1994 while working on a new album. The reason stated was artistic differences - the inability to agree on which direction to follow - and so the split was amicable.

Ex-members went on their separate ways (Sean Malone and Sean Reinert were session members in Aghora ) but some of them re-formed as Portal .
