Cosmic rays were first reported to cause visual perception of flashes of light during the Apollo program. Astronauts en route for the Moon were subject to cosmic ray bombardments, and it is believed that these rays produced Cherenkov radiation as they passed through the vitreous humor of the astronauts' eyeballs.
