The Copa do Brasil (or Brazilian Cup) is a knockout competition played by 64 football teams, representing all the 26 states of Brazil plus the Federal District. Teams playing Copa Libertadores aren't allowed to participate in the Brazilian Cup in the same year.
Format
The tournament is played in two-legged knockout stages. In the first two rounds the away team is automatically qualified to the next round if they beat the home team by a 2-or-more-goal difference in the first leg.
The away-goals rule is used in Brazilian Cup which is a unique feature when compared to other South American competitions.
The Brazilian Cup is an opportunity for teams from smaller states to play against the big teams and episodes of giant-killing have happened throughout the competition history.
The Brazilian Cup winner is automatically qualified to the next year's Copa Libertadores edition which prevents a team from winning the Brazilian Cup twice in a row.
