Chino Valley Freeway

The Chino Valley Freeway, is the assigned name for California State Highway 71 (CA/SR-71), a freeway/highway of about 15 miles in length located entirely within Southern California. Contrary to its name, this highway is not a freeway throughout its entire length. Beginning at its northeast terminus at the Kellogg Interchange complex in San Dimas to a short distance south of Holt Avenue in Pomona, it is a four-lane (2 lanes in each direction) freeway. From that point and through the remainder of Pomona, it is a four-lane (2 lanes in each direction) surface street with at grade, signalized intersections with other, 'regular' streets. At its junction with the Pomona Freeway, California State Highway 60 (CA/SR-60) in south Pomona, all aspects of the highway 'upgrade' to freeway standards in its alignment, lane width, pavement, barriers, access, etc. This freeway remains a 'freeway' until the San Bernardino/Riverside County line where it'downgrades' to a two-lane (one lane in each direction) highway. This condition remains until its terminus at its junction with the Riverside Freeway, California State Highway 91 (CA/SR-91) in Corona. Due to various budget constraints that have been exacerbated by the state of California's budget crisis that began in 2002, upgrades of the non-freeway segments to freeway status have been delayed.

As this freeway/highway serves as an important daigonally aligned (northwest-southeast) commuter traffic corridor between the cities in the Pomona Valley (eastern Los Angeles County) and the cities of western Riverside County, it is heavily travelled and is used as an alternative to the Orange Freeway, California State Highway 57 (CA/SR-57) located to the west and the Ontario Freeway, Interstate 15 (I-15) located to the east.
