Charlotte Forten Grimké (17 August 1837–1914) was a antislavery activist, poet, educator and abolitionist. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States to Robert Bridges and Mary Woods Forten. Her persuits began when she became a member of the Salem Female Anti-Slavery Society where she developed her activism through networking and money raising. In 1856 she was driven into teaching by poverty but had to give up after two years due to tuberculosis. At this point her aptitude for poetry was realised, much of which was activist in theme and published in the Liberator and Anglo African magazines. In the 1860s she worked for the U.S. Treasury Department recruiting teachers.
