Record producer Charles Bailey attended the February 2003 anti-war protest marches in Hyde Park, London, one of a worldwide series of protests against the then looming war in Iraq.

Bailey says that hearing member of parliament Tony Benn's words sent a shiver down his spine and gave him the idea of approaching Benn with the idea for a disc called Tony Benn’s Greatest Hits.

Benn then sent him a selection of speeches that had been professionally recorded in the House of Commons. Benn said “Bailey hasn’t amended them". Benn’s authoritative voice booms across a D’Angelo-esque backing track, complete with melodic violins and tinkling piano accompaniment.

Bailey said, "Tony Benn touched me with his speech about the Iraq War in Hyde Park. The only times I ever felt like that before, was when Bob Marley sang at Crystal Palace, and when Mandela came to Brixton.”
