The Portuguese hero Nuno Álvares Pereira was born in Cernache de Bonjardim on 24 June 1360.

The population of the parish is of 3 283 inhabitantes (2001), in 72.06 sq km.

The parish chairman (presidente da junta de freguesia) is (2004) Joaquim Filipe Patricio
