Centennial is a city located in Arapahoe County, Colorado. Founded in 2001, no official census data is available on the city. According to the United States Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, the city has a total population of 99,447.
After hearing plans by neighboring Greenwood Village to incorporate parts of then-unincorporated Arapahoe County in order to increase revenue, citizens of the area feared that the increased taxes in the largely-commercial annexation would take revenue from the county, leaving residents without any benefits. Campaigning on a promise to keep city taxes at 1% (one of the campaigns against incorporation appealed to maintain the unincorporated 3.8% sales tax), Centennial was incorporated by vote on September 20, 2000 (77% in favor), and became the largest city incorporation in United States history.
