These are encyclopedias for which the copyright of an older edition (early 20th century or earlier) has expired and are therefore in the public domain. Thus, they are free to use for any purpose, although their content is in many cases dated.
Articles from them are free to be incorporated into Wikipedia, although one must be careful to check that the content is not overly dated before doing so, including not only facts, but concepts, perspectives and ideas which have not been been replaced with modern research. These older sources should be supplimentary and not the only, or primary, source.
