London, the capital of the United Kingdom, lies in south-east England, on the River Thames. With over seven million inhabitants within Greater London and around fourteen million in the wider metro area, it is the second-most populous conurbation in Europe after Moscow. The historic centre, the City of London (or Square Mile), is far smaller but remains a separate political entity and an important financial centre.

London's history an an urban centre is believed to have begun with the Roman foundation of the town of Londinium. In medieval times, Westminster was established as the English royal capital, and in 1707 London became capital of the newly formed United Kingdom. For centuries the city has been a globally important centre of culture, commerce and politics. Well known for such sights as Buckingham Palace, St Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, the Palace of Westminster, Tower Bridge and its distinctive red buses, London is a major tourist destination.
