Castalla

Castalla is a city located in the comarca of L'Alcoià , in the province of Alicante, Spain. It has an area of 114.6 km2 and, according to the 2002 census, a total population of 7,940 inhabitants and a population density of 69.28 inhab/km2. Castalla is located in a mountainous area, 35 km from Alicante city.

The economy of Castalla is based on farming (almonds, olives and grapes) and the industries of toys, construction materials, furniture and textile. The most important monuments in Castalla are the walled castle from the 11th century, which is placed at the top of a hill; the Hermitage of the Blood (from the 13th century); the Catholic church of la Asunción (from the 16th century) and the building of the town hall (from the 17th century). The Moros y Cristianos festival of Castalla is celebrated each September.
