Carling Bassett-Seguso

Carling Kathrin Bassett-Seguso (born October 9, 1967 in Toronto) is a former Canadian athlete. She is the daughter of the late John Frederick Bassett , an executive for his father John Bassett's company Baton Broadcasting, and Susan Carling, the granddaughter of politician and brewery executive John Carling.

In 1981, Bassett won the Canadian junior indoor title in tennis, and in 1982 was ranked first in the world juniors after winning in Tokyo and Taipei. That same year, she became the youngest winner of the Canadian closed championship at the age of just 14. She won the title again in 1983 and 1986.

By age 16 Bassett was Canada's top tennis player, scoring victories over top international players and winning the Gunze Invitational at Osaka, Japan. She lost to Chris Evert in a World Tennis Association championship final. At the same time, she had a successful second career as a fashion model, working for the world-famous Ford Modeling Agency .

In 1983, Bassett advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. She was a semifinalist in the 1984 US Open, and in 1985 she reached the semifinals of the Women's International Tennis Association tournaments. In 1986, she was again a quarterfinalist in the French Open, losing to Chris Evert, and in 1987 she won the Strasbourg Grand Prix at Strasbourg, France.

She married American tennis champ Robert Seguso in 1987, and retired from competitive tennis the following year.
