Cardinal Stadium

Cardinal Stadium is the name of a college and former minor league baseball park in Louisville, Kentucky. It is on the State Fairgrounds, and was called Fairgrounds Stadium when it first opened its doors to baseball.

It was the home of various Louisville minor league clubs from 1957 through 1999, until the club opened its own ballpark, Louisville Slugger Field.

Although the ballpark was renamed as Cardinal Stadium in 1982, when the Louisville Redbirds of the International League were the top farm club of the St. Louis Cardinals, that was just a happy coincidence. It was actually due to the ballpark having been remodeled as a football stadium for the University of Louisville, who are known as the Cardinals.

It has also been the home field of the University's baseball team since they abandoned Parkway Field several years ago. The football team opened its own stadium several years ago, and the baseball team is planning to build a new facility also.
