C.E.M. Joad

Cyril Edwin Mitchinson Joad (August 12, 1891 - April 9, 1953) was a British philosopher and broadcasting personality. He was born in Durham and attended Blundell's School before Balliol College, Oxford. He was a civil servant until 1930 when he joined the philosophy department of Birkbeck College, London where he became head. He was a prodigious author producing a Guide to Philosophy (1936) and Guide to the Philosophy of Morals and Politics (1938). He was best known for his appearances on the BBC radio programme The Brains Trust , where he employed the catchphrase "It all depends what you mean by ..."

Under the Fifth Rib. A Belligerent Autobiography was first published in 1932 (later reiussed under the title The Book of Joad).
