Bolivar is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,223. The town is named after the patriot Simon Bolivar.

The Town of Bolivar was incorporated in 1825 and is on the south border of the county. There is also a village called Bolivar in the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.9 km² (35.9 mi²). 92.9 km² (35.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,223 people, 844 households, and 602 families residing in the town. The population density is 23.9/km² (62.0/mi²). There are 1,009 housing units at an average density of 10.9/km² (28.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.83% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 844 households out of which 37.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males.

• Little Genesee Creek -- A stream flowing through the northwest part of the town past Richburg and Bolivar village.
• Richburg --The south part of the Village of Richburg on the north town line.
• Sawyer -- A location by Route 417 east of Kossuth.
• South Bolivar -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 33 and 18 near the Pennsylvania border.
• Vosburg -- A location on Route 417 at the east town line.
