Blenheim, New York

Blenheim is a town located in Schoharie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 330.

The Town of Blenheim is in the south part of the county.

History

The town was one of the original six towns of the county, created in 1797. The town has the longest single-span covered bridge in the world (232 feed) built in 1855.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 89.0 km² (34.4 mi²). 87.9 km² (33.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 330 people, 150 households, and 97 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.8/km² (9.7/mi²). There are 303 housing units at an average density of 3.4/km² (8.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.97% White, 1.52% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 2.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 150 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.64.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 33.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,500, and the median income for a family is $44,821. Males have a median income of $32,321 versus $24,167 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,993. 8.5% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 14.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
