Berkshire is a town located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,366.

The Town of Berkshire is in the northeast part of the county. The town was established in 1808.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 78.3 km² (30.2 mi²). 78.2 km² (30.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

The east town line of Berkshire is the border of Broome County, New York, and part of the west town line is the border of Tompkins County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,366 people, 506 households, and 384 families residing in the town. The population density is 17.5/km² (45.2/mi²). There are 561 housing units at an average density of 7.2/km² (18.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.76% White, 0.37% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 506 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 103.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,625, and the median income for a family is $43,676. Males have a median income of $29,620 versus $22,865 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,735. 11.4% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Berkshire

  • Berkshire -- The hamlet of Berkshire is located where Routes 8, 10, and 38 converge. The community is in the center of the town.
  • East Berkshire -- A hamlet east of Berkshire village on Route 10.
  • Wilson Creek -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town and the name of a stream that flows past the community.
