The Battle of Elkin’s Ferry was a land battle of the American Civil War that took place on April 3-4, 1864. Commanding the Union forces was Major General Fred Steele who had the 3rd Division, VII Corps and two cavalry brigades (about 8,500 men) under his command. Commanding the Confederate forces was Brigadier General John S. Marmaduke who had 3 cavalry brigades (about 7,500 men) under his command. The battle took place in Clark County and Nevada County, Arkansas lasted two days and was a Union Victory.
During the Camden expedition the Union forces had to ford the Little Missouri River because all of the bridges were impassible. The Union forces reached Elkin’s Ferry before the Confederates, but on April 3 were attacked by Brigadier General Joseph O. "Jo" Shelby's cavalry and on April 4 1864 Brigadier General John S. Marmaduke’s cavalry attacked the Union forces as the they were trying to cross the river. The Union forcers were able to fend off both of these attacks and were able to cross the river.
