Battle of Berne

The Battle of Berne is the informal name given to the football match between Brazil and Hungary during the World Cup finals on June 27, 1954 in Berne.

Without their talisman Ferenc Puskás, out injured, Hungary was leading Brazil 2-0 when Brazil finally scored their first on a penalty. From then on the match grew progressively violent.

Brazil's Nilton Santos and Hungary captain József Bozsik were sent off in the 73rd minute during a bad-tempered and physical second-half which also saw Brazil's Humberto sent off in the 79th minute.

Post-match brawls continued when Puskás was assaulted with a bottle and the Brazilian squad scuffled with the Hungarians in the opposition's dressing room.
