The Batey was the name given by Taino Indians to a special plaza around which they built their homes. It was usually a rectangular area surrounded by stones with carved symbols.
The Batey was the area in which Batey ceremonies took place. The batey ceremony whilst related to ancient Mesoamerican ball game was more of a judicial contest than a game.
Contestants from many tribes would come together and play making it an effective way of resolving differences rather than by fighting. Each game would consist of two teams of 24 warriors.
