Base metal

A base metal is a metal that oxidizes or corrodes relatively easily, and reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen. Examples include iron, copper, lead and zinc. Compare to noble metal.

Alchemists were concerned with the transmutation of base metals into gold (a noble metal).
