Basal metabolic rate

Basal metabolic rate (BMR), is the rate of metabolism when an individual is at rest in a warm envirnonment and is in the post absorptive state, and have not eaten for at least 12 hours. The release of energy in this state is only sufficient for the vital organs such as heart, lungs, nervous system, and kidneys.

Basal metabolic rate is measured under very restrictive circumstances. A more common and closely related term used in many cases is resting metabolic rate (RMR), which is measured under less strict conditions.[1]
