Audiencia

An Audiencia (Spanish: audiency) was a Judicial District to functioned as an Appeals Court. Each Audiencia had Oidores (Spanish: hearer, a judge).

In what is now present Mexico, the Viceroy himself served as oidor, but several Audiencias existed in New Spain, such as in former Panama, Santo Domingo (West Indies and Venezuela), Mexico (Mexico City, Florida, Gulf of Mexico), Guatemala, and Nueva Galicia. The Audiencia de Charas' is present-day Bolivia; the Audiencia de Quito now Ecuador.
