Arkansas City is a city located in Desha County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 589. The city is the county seat of Desha County.

Geography

Arkansas City is located at 33°36'32" North, 91°12'13" West (33.608809, -91.203602)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 589 people, 231 households, and 161 families residing in the city. The population density is 473.8/km² (1,232.2/mi²). There are 279 housing units at an average density of 224.4/km² (583.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 55.01% White, 43.80% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 3.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 231 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,014, and the median income for a family is $27,500. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $17,188 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,523. 31.8% of the population and 25.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 41.6% of those under the age of 18 and 37.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
