Arfon

Arfon was a local government district in Gwynedd, Wales, from 1974 to 1996.

It was created on April 1, 1974 as a successor to the boroughs of Bangor and Caernarvon, the Bethesa urban district, Ogwen Rural District , and part of Gwyrfai Rural District .

It was abolished a district on April 1, 1996, when Gwynedd was reconstituted as a unitary authorty. The area remains in use for an area committee of Gwynedd Council.

Its name derives from a historic area in Wales, that is etymologically linked to the 'arvon' in Caernarvon. The 1911 Encyclopedia describes 'Arfon' being the northerly of the two parliamentary divisions of Caernarvonshire; the other being Eifion . The name refers to the area's position opposite the isle of Anglesey (Sir Fôn).
